How to Read an Inch Ruler
An inch ruler is divided into fractions. Reading from left to right, each full number (1, 2, 3β¦) marks an inch. Between each inch, the ruler is divided into progressively smaller fractions:
- Longest line (after the inch mark): 1/2 inch (0.5")
- Next longest: 1/4 inch marks (0.25" and 0.75")
- Medium marks: 1/8 inch increments
- Shortest marks: 1/16 inch increments
Our screen ruler renders all these marks at the correct proportional size β the same as a physical 12" ruler β once your screen is calibrated.
Why Use an Online Ruler Instead of a Printed One?
Printed rulers are only accurate if your printer is calibrated. Most home printers scale by 95β105%, making printed rulers off by up to 5%. A screen-based ruler that's calibrated to your specific monitor's pixel density is more reliable than printing, requires no paper, and is immediately available whenever you need it.
